ABOUT VOLUNTARY ARTS GROUPS – encouraging healthy, social, creative people

Around 20% of the UK’s population is involved in voluntary arts groups. So it’s likely that one in five of your patients may already be part of a voluntary arts group – and many others could benefit from taking part.

These groups – ranging from choirs to quilt-makers, dance groups to painting societies, drama groups to samba bands – really make a difference to people’s lives and their communities. They’re open to everyone and attended by people of all ages, skills, abilities and cultures. They bring people together, provide friendship and social connections, and enable and encourage people to participate, in their community, in society – and in some cases, in life.

They help to unlock potential, eradicate apathy and build strong, happy, independent and fulfilled individuals and communities.

Who we are and what we do

This website has been created by Voluntary Arts. We raise awareness of the contribution that arts participation makes to the wellbeing of individuals and communities as well as to social inclusion, lifelong learning, active citizenship and volunteering. We advocate for increased resources for voluntary and amateur arts groups, and share information and knowledge through our publications and events, to help ordinary people to make, do, promote and present arts and crafts for themselves.

We have five offices, in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales (two offices including our central office) – see below for contact details.

Read an article from our newsletter for voluntary arts groups: Living creative lives is a public health issue.

Our members and the organisations we work with

Our members are organisations representing grassroots voluntary arts groups. Find out more about the groups that our members represent here, and view our directory of members here.

We also work with government, policy makers, local authorities, voluntary sector bodies, and organisations involved in life-long learning, health and volunteering.
